Player Plots

Player Plots

Player plots are plots that have a large enough reach to require some sort of sign up, or would be difficult for those not directly involved to ignore, or need some sort of NPC/mod involvement.

Examples of player plots include:

  • Actions that would negatively affect 4-or-more PCs.
  • Death of a PC.
  • Death of a named NPC.
  • Death of more than 1 unnamed NPC at the same time.
  • Significant property damage.
  • A PC gaining powers as a result of aligning with a patron Entity.
  • Anything that could potentially expose the supernatural to the wider world.
  • Please submit player plots at least a week or two in advance of when you'd like to run it. In the event something happens suddenly that would escalate to a player plot, please let us know as soon as possible.

You know how most people could live without their powers/entity connections but seem intent on keeping and using them anyway? Well, Cortana's got the opposite problem: she's not entirely sure whether she can even be sustained by conventional technology anymore, but she wants to try find a way so that she can disconnect herself from the Eye and its influence as much as possible.

Fuck this shit, she wants out.

In the interest of doing so, she's going to start talking to her fellow IT peeps and researchers about the connections between entities and advanced tech and just what is available without entity influence.

Eventually, if it seems like it might be possible, she may reach out to higher ups at ADI-whoever seems most able to help her-about this plan.

Would this actually work/is there anything she can learn/would ADI even want to help her? She'd be willing to go as far as blind herself to completely sever her ties to the Eye (provided she learns that that is a thing a person can do) as long as she had reasonable assurance that she wouldn't go rampant or immediately die.

...OOCly, I don't actually care whether or not she finds a way to make this work or it simply turns out to be impossible: both her current level of abilities and the limitations that would likely come with a separation from the Eye would be interesting to play with. I'm also cool with her losing her hologram form and being confined to a robotic body (or even just a computer system, though that may make playing her difficult) loss of most or all of her abilities, etc. Really, this is more about Cortana coming to the realization that she has been manipulated by an omniscient eldritch asshole to a far greater extent than she thought and that she does not want to be used by any other omniscient eldritch assholes of any sort, ever, than what actually results from that realization.

Okay, while I work out my timeline for this I have some additional questions.

How much help would ADI be willing to give? She's got access to people who can help her with designing and building it, and combined with ADIs knowledge that should do a lot, but advanced robot bodies, particularly humanlike ones (which is what she'd want), aren't exactly cheap to make or maintain. Would ADI help with the expense? What would she owe them in return?

I'm assuming that the body would need some equivalent of eating and sleeping/would not be able to avoid or bypass these needs? Would a recharge period where she has to be plugged in and offline for several hours work for that?

Thinking about a three month timeline structured something like this, if that's alright:

Month 1 - These two months will mostly consist of testing Cortana's ideas, planning, gathering resources, and soliciting assistance.

She'll be doing a lot of 'joyriding' in various less advanced robotic bodies modified to host her. Basically a series of practice runs where she gets used to operating a robotic body and also tests the extent of the Eye's influence. She'll be forking over the money for these herself (she doesn't have human needs and hasn't bought much, so she can probably afford to burn some cash) and modifying them herself, so they won't be anything super expensive (no Boston Dynamics type shit, for instance), but a roomba and a small modular robot capable of multiple configurations ought to be obtainable.

She'll also be learning what she can about available technologies and working out what human capabilities she can keep. She'd like her eventual robot body to look at least somewhat human/like her avatar, but even more important are object manipulation and sensory capabilities-she doesn't want to go back to being cut off from the physical world, unable to even touch her friends and show them affection. Also, she really likes being able to feel and smell. This will be heavily emphasized to those working on the project-she doesn't need to be exactly like a human, but please don't take this away from her.

Months 2, 3 - After she's got the materials and expertise and design ideas all sorted out, actual work on constructing the robot will begin. Starting with just planning and building, Cortana will eventually move to testing components, limbs, and eventually incomplete but functional versions of the body itself. She'll be wanting to put the body through rigorous testing for everything from its reaction times, to sensory capabilities, to how it functions in different environments, to strength, to its range of movement. She may enlist friends to play games and do activities that require high levels of movement or coordination with her.

It's about this time that she'll start to notice that anything she can do that counts as an inhuman ability seems to be sustaining her connection to the eye. She'll start working on removing those capabilities and restricting what she can do. It'll start with the obvious add ons and eventually progress until she finally puts processing limitors on her software to make her function at more human timescales.

(I actually did a bit of research on touch sensitive robotics a while back it's pretty neat.)

Cortana will want to have feeling in more than just her fingers (she wants to try for full feeling in any area that's supposed to be sensitive in humans + a general sense that can like, at least let her pick up the pressure when she's being hugged), is she gonna have an issue with getting the money/materials for something like that?

Makes sense. Giving up even a part of her ability to feel things would be huge for her so that actually works out really well.
